Biking: There are numerous bike trails located on the Lower Cape. They vary in difficulty and length, but all offer an excursion through the scenic and natural surroundings that are essentially Cape Cod. All are paved or surfaced and reserved for bike and pedestrian traffic only.
Cape Cod Rail Trail: The Cape Cod Rail Trail follows a former railroad right-of-way for 22 miles through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. It’s a paved surface with few hills, and with well-marked automobile crossings, it’s ideal for cyclists. There are many opportunities to get off the trail and visit a beach. Food and water are also readily available and public restrooms can be found at Nickerson State Park, Salt Pond Visitors Center, and the Marconi National Seashore Headquarters.
Nauset Trail is 1.6 miles long, starts at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham and winds along the upland woodlands above Nauset Marsh to a boardwalk that traverses the marsh and connects the trail to Coast Guard Beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is an idyllic trail and perfect for families, with no steep hills or dangerous curves. Head of the Meadow Trail in Truro runs for 2 miles between High Head Road and Head of the Meadow Beach parking lot in Truro. Flat and curvy, the trail takes you through a dune area past low-lying vegetation. Province Lands Bicycle Trail in Provincetown is very hilly and features hairpin curves and few straight stretches. The 5-mile loop traverses several formidable dune ridges and takes riders around cranberry bogs, lily ponds, and scenic wetlands. The variety of topography is truly breathtaking. It's exhilarating to bike through the dunes in brilliant sunshine on a clear summer's day and then race through a cool, scented pinewood. Along the way you can leave the main loop and access Race Point and Herring Cove Beaches for a dip in the ocean. Hiking: Would you rather travel by foot? There are many trails on the Lower Cape where you can take in the natural beauty of your surroundings at a slower pace. These hikes vary from ½ mile to 10 miles in length. Great Island Trail - Chequessett Neck Rd., (at the end) Wellfleet. This is an 8-mile Cape Cod National Seashore trail leading to Jeremy Point. The point covered at high tide, so plan accordingly. (Guided tours available) Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail - Marconi Area, Rte. 6, Wellfleet (508) 349-3785. The Audubon Sanctuary is located in South Wellfleet and has 5 miles of trails that take visitors through meadows and woods, onto bay beaches and past fresh water ponds. Trail lengths vary and maps are available at the entrance to the sanctuary in the Visitor Center. Town of Wellfleet - Box Turtle Conservation Area Trail Map: Box Turtle Woods and Bayberry Hill - Box Turtle Woods is a 6.44-acre Wellfleet Conservation Trust land, surrounded by 43 acres of inter tidal marsh. Town of Wellfleet - Fox Island Conservation Area Trail Map: Fox Island Marsh - 29.7 acres of Wellfleet Conservation Trust land traverses pitch pine and mixed oak forest land en route to the Fox Island Marsh. Fort Hill Trail off Rt. 6 Eastham (marked by brown and white signs) is a 1½-mile series of connected pathways that lead through cedar/oak forests, along the edge of Nauset Marsh. Cranberry Bog Trail - Pamet Rd., Truro. This a 1/2-mile trail with parts over a boardwalk and around an old cranberry bog. Pilgrim Heights Area - Rte. 6, N. Truro. There are two 3/4-mile Cape Cod National Seashore trails along salt meadows, a blueberry farm, and dunes, with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Beech Forest Trail - Race point Rd. off Rte. 6, Provincetown. This is a 1-mile trail with a forest of beech trees, a freshwater pond and sand dunes. Truro Hills Trail winds through wooded hollows, down dirt paths, through open fields, and along dune trails. This is an all-day hike and requires planning. You should obtain a map from the Seashore before setting out. (Approximately 10 miles)
